Tochigi is a pit-tanned nubuck leather. Pit tanning is an ancient method of slowly tanning leather using vegetable tannins. The leather is soaked in a tank-like \”pit\” and meticulously finished over a period of several weeks to several months. It takes time, but the leather is strong and resilient, and the more it is used, the more it develops its patina and a deeper character. Tochigi removes the looser outer fibers and retains only the dense core of the hide, resulting in leather that is exceptionally durable.
