xi.,162, (2) pp. First Arthur Rackham edition with 13 tissue-guarded colour plates. Publisher's original gilt-decorated green cloth with black lettering to front board & spine. Stain to top edge of lower board, wear to edges of darkened spine, with front hinge weakening only very slightly, though binding overall is firm, if just a little warped and bumped at points. A little spotting internally, though the illustrations are clean and bright. No previous owner's names. Illustrated title page and endpapers.Proem by Austin Dobson. A very pleasant copy of the first edition to be illustrated by Rackham, whose illustrations differ in a unique and charming way from the originals of John Tenniel. Illustrations by illustrators other than Tenniel only began to be published in the 1890s, with Rackham's constituting one of the significant early contributions.
